“After reflecting on the last 6 years of my surgical training, the 4 years of Duke medical school and undergraduate years, I am hard pressed to think of another experience more meaningful than the Feagin Leadership Program in how it continues to shape my daily strive to be the best surgeon/physician/human being. The people I met, the conversations we had, the relationships I developed, the mentoring and training I received, and most importantly, meeting Dr. Feagin, all shaped the way I now view the world and my role in it. It was the year I set a goal to always be a kind, patient, understanding, empathetic surgeon regardless of external and internal stressors. Getting to chief year in general surgery residency at one of the largest public hospitals in the country, that goal gets challenged every minute of every day. When faced with adversity, I think back to the promise I made to myself after meeting Dr. Feagin and the incredible year of learning from him and his champions. His soul lives on in all of us. I am so proud to be a Feagin Scholar.”
