Celebrating 15 Years of Making a Difference

The mission of the Feagin Leadership Program is to provide a transformational learning experience that develops effective, ethical leaders who positively influence healthcare.

The Feagin Leadership Program creates a unique opportunity for the exploration of ethical leadership principles that resonate across multiple disciplines, including medicine, military, academia, athletics and business.

Partnering to develop transformational leaders in healthcare!

Who We Are

The Feagin Leadership Program was created to honor John A. Feagin, Jr., M.D., Duke University Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Feagin's dedication to developing ethical leaders of character is the inspiration for this effort. Our program benefits leadership education within the Duke medical community.

What We Do

The Leadership Program engages Duke medical school students, residents, and fellows in their own leadership journeys. The program includes five leadership sessions, individual coaching, monthly team meetings, attendance at the Feagin Forum, and the creation of a leadership project focused on leadership development in medicine.

Our Story

Since its inception in 2008, the Feagin Leadership Program has continued to grow and evolve through its purpose to improve leadership training within medical education.

We provide a transformational learning experience that develops effective, ethical leaders to positively influence healthcare.

Our Why

“We need to fix medicine. This starts with physicians accepting that they are the leaders who can transform healthcare from a solely clinical model to a team-based, patient-centered, humanitarian one. Educating and empowering our future physicians to become change-makers and responsible leaders should be the primary focus of our medical schools and training programs.”

—Dean Taylor. M.D., Chairman, Feagin Leadership Program

“The Feagin Leadership Program taught me that it is my duty to my patients to continually self-reflect and try to improve core leadership domains like emotional intelligence, communication, and teamwork and that this learning is as important, if not more important, than my ongoing medical learning as an anesthesiologist.  The program led me to discover that leadership development is one of my passions.”

— Jennifer Hauck, MD,  Feagin Alumna, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology  Duke University School of Medicine

The Leadership Forum

The Leadership Forum is the preeminent event that convenes emerging and established leaders who are passionate about leadership development and are committed to the ongoing enhancement of their abilities.

  1. It is an annual invitation-only conference that brings together world-class leaders to share their expertise with invitees. Invitees are an exclusive group of proven and emerging leaders from multiple professional fields. These leaders become integral members of the Leadership Program’s “Community of Leaders.”

  2. Additionally, the Forum serves as the capstone event for the Scholars year-long curriculum. Scholars present their team projects and engage with all participants in discussions focused on leadership.

  3. The lessons learned from the Forum will be incorporated into the Feagin Leadership Program and will be disseminated by the Forum participants resulting in more effective, ethical leadership in Medicine, locally, nationally and internationally.

The Scholarship Program

  • The program serves as an incubator and catalyst for a nationwide transformation of medical education by emphasizing leadership development through the continuum of professional education.

  • The scholars participate in a year-long leadership development curriculum that includes seminars, workshops, conferences, coaching and mentorship opportunities. Each team designs and implements a major “deliverable”.

  • Scholars are selected in a competitive process from Duke and Duke –National University Singapore medical students, and Duke graduate medical education residents and fellows.

Outreach Effort

  • Through the collaborations established by our Outreach effort, the Feagin Program will significantly impact leadership development within medical education nationally and internationally.

  • This is done through conducting leadership development sessions to physician groups, medical societies, and residency programs that have expressed their desire to have us share our program's expertise with their organizations.

The alumni of the Feagin Leadership Program are on the ‘front lines’ of this pandemic. They are sharing some of their thoughts and inspirational stories….

It is critical we train our future doctors to be leaders dedicated to transforming healthcare. Doctors who can:

Create collaborative environments that involve medical teams, families, and patients to participate in a patient’s care

  • Influence others for the benefit of the patient

  • Incorporate mind, body, and spirit in a patient’s healthcare plan

  • Communicate and provide emotional support for patients and families

  • Focus on the patient-provider relationship as a partnership to better meet a patient’s goals

  • Implement changes in hospitals and practices by re-examining risks and being open to new ideas

  • Use traditional ethical leadership skills for effective decision-making

Feedback from a 2021 Feagin Team Project focused on Innovation, Medical Education and Industry

"This symposium seriously has a great lineup and is as comprehensive as it gets."

— Robert Isaacs, MD, Panelist Speaker

“It was a real honor to be able to be a part of this excellent symposium. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the challenges of innovation and entrepreneurship, and how to overcome them in the pursuit of making great ideas turn into practical realities. It is a must-see event for anybody working in innovation at Duke University”

— Patrick Codd MD, Panelist Speaker

"Entering my ninth year at Duke and third different training program, I’ve been fortunate to hear stories about Duke innovations, thinkers, and programs for a long time. The Duke Healthcare Innovations Symposium concentrated years of these stories into hours. It was an all-star highlight reel of people sharing how to navigate the same complicated waters into which I was about to wade. As I prepare for residency, I was happy to walk away with philosophical and practical tips on how to approach innovation intelligently."

— Syed Adil, Duke MS4, Audience Participant, rising PGY1 Duke NSU Intern
